Biography

I have been practicing in the field of psychotherapy for fourteen years. While accruing my clinical hours I worked with women and youth in various community mental health centers in Los Angeles County. At three different agencies, I specialized in working with victims of domestic violence. I worked with survivors individually and also led Empowerment groups that combined education, support and the creative arts to guide survivors on their journey toward healing. I also worked exclusively with children and adolescents for three school-based therapy programs. I worked with children ages 5 to 17 individually, in small groups and I also facilitated an Anti-Bullying program for 2nd grade students and a Stress Management/Mindfulness class for at-risk teens.

For the last 7 years I have worked in private practice and just recently began working as a Title I School Counselor for several schools in underserved communities. I entered this field with the goal of increasing individual, family, and community access to mental health services. In my private practice I primarily service insurance clients, including Medi-Cal members, those who otherwise do not have resources to afford therapy. This is congruent with my personal and professional values. Lastly, as a third generation Mexican American raised in a blue-collar family, I am very honored to broaden representation of faculty in higher education.

Question and Answer
Please describe your teaching philosophy.

My teaching philosophy includes a focus on a combination of important tasks: the development of knowledge and the application of new concepts and skills. We are all students to some degree and each time we enter a structured educational environment, we bring with us a foundation of knowledge and skills. My goal in the classroom setting is to strengthen each student's knowledge and create opportunities for them to apply what they know and what they are learning to potential clinical scenarios. I hope to inspire each student to not only complete their education but also develop a passion for mental health and psychotherapy.
